The boy was walking home from school when he was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer in a dark alleyway near 68th Street and Langley Avenue about 10:40 a.m., according to an eyewitness and witness accounts.
Chicago police said the officer opened fire on the boy after he failed to obey the officer’s commands for him to drop a knife.
Police said the officer thought the boy was going to stab him with the knife.
The 23-year-old officer, who has not been identified, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries after the shooting and was released from the hospital.
The department’s Office of Professional Standards is conducting an investigation into the officer’s use of force.
A medical examiner will determine the boy’s official cause of death.
The boy’s 15-year-old girlfriend told NBC 5 that her boyfriend was stabbed with a knife before being shot by the officer.
The girl said the officer first tried to stop the boy with his baton, and then pulled out his gun and shot the boy, who was on his way to meet his friends in the back of a police van.
The officer came by the van to speak with the boy’s friends who were already being questioned by police, according to the eyewitness. The officer opened the back doors of the van and pulled out his gun.
The officer continued to pull the trigger while standing behind the boy, but did not fire because he was unable to see the boy’s hands, according to the eyewitness.
The officer then told the boy to show him his hands, but the boy did not respond, according to the eyewitness.
