Certain Office 2013 products are kept up to date automatically by using a technology called Click-to-Run. If you'd like to verify that you're up to date, check your Office version number and manually update Office if necessary.
The following table provides a list of updates for Office 2013, with the most recent release date listed first. The table includes the version number for the release and a link to the Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article, if available, that contains information about the fixes that are included in the update.
Microsoft today published a blog post to remind users about the upcoming minimum version requirements for connecting Outlook for Windows to Office 365/Microsoft 365 services. From November 1, 2021, only Outlook 2013 Service Pack 1 (with latest fixes) and later will be able to connect to Microsoft 365 services. After this date, several popular versions of Outlook including Outlook 2007, 2010, and Office 2013 versions earlier than 15.0.4971.1000 will not be able to connect with Microsoft 365/Office 365 services.
If you intend to rearm Office 2013 SP1, you first have to check whether you have a retail edition or a volume edition. You can buy the retail edition in shops, and you can download it from various online stores. The evaluation edition you can download from Microsoft is also a retail version. Even MSDN subscribers can only download the retail edition. The volume edition is only available for volume customers through the Volume Licensing Service Center.

However, you can rearm your Office 2013 SP1 trial once, which gives you 90 days in all to evaluate Office. When I rearmed an expired Office evaluation version, I had another 30 days to test Office, and the rearm count was set to 0.

Office 2013 is currently coming to the end of its lifecycle, which ends on April 11, 2023. Given the lack of significant innovations in the newer Office applications, many companies might want to stick with the old apps, even if Microsoft no longer provides security updates for them.
In the case of Office 2013 SP1, Microsoft points out in this support document that these applications may already encounter reliability or performance issues when communicating with the Microsoft 365 cloud services.Nevertheless, they will not be actively blocked from Microsoft's online services before April 2023.
Most installations these days are Click-to-Run by default. The MSI download media is typically only available to Microsoft customers who have a volume license agreement for Office 2013 or MSDN subscribers.
Interestingly, Click-to-Run is considered to be virtualized which means that all the Office 2013 program files are isolated. This isolation allows programs to co-exist (such as Office 2010 and Office 2013 side by side). The virtualization also allows it to continue to receive updates independently of Windows updates. The streaming and virtualization behavior of Click-to-Run is based on Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) technologies.
If automatic updates are enabled in the Update Options, then you should be getting the latest Office 2013 updates as they are released. Although, new functionality like Synonyms that works in conjunction with Power BI for Office 365 will not arrive via updates (**See update at the bottom of this entry).
Service Pack 1 for Office 2013 has been released. However, the Synonyms functionality is not part of SP1 for MSI installations as described above. All indications point to Synonyms not being part of the MSI installation until the next version of Office. Theoretically this makes sense for most customers because the Synonyms only works with Q&A which is part of Power BI for Office 365. And, if you have Office 365, you probably have the Click-to-Run installation.
In a move that shouldn't surprise anyone, Microsoft has released Office 2013 Service Pack 1. Known as KB 2817430, the update for the on-premises versions of Office has been widely anticipated since last year. Those of you renting Office 365 need not be concerned: You will soon receive the updates automagically.
The easiest, safest way to apply SP1 is to go through Microsoft Update. If you must, you can download the update manually from the KB article. Note in particular that if you're running 32-bit Office 2013 on a 64-bit machine (which describes a large percentage of all Office 2013 customers), you need the 32-bit version of the Service Pack.
There's also a long list of COM add-ins for Office 2013 that crash under SP1. If you're using Intel's Sent to Bluetooth, Evernote's Outlook Clipper, or Abbyy Finereader, heed the KB article's warning and update to the latest version of the add-ins.

February's Patch Tuesday continues its tempestuous ways. Now there's word that one of the optional Office 2013 patches, KB 3114717, makes many installations of Word 2013 unusable. In addition, there are reports -- apparently related -- of lockups and slowdowns with Excel 2013 and Outlook 2013.
When KB3114717 is installed typing in a .docx Document becomes nearly impossible and CPU load goes to 100% (.doc has no issues). This happens with Word 2013 only, Word 2016 is not affected. Tested on Windows 8.1 Enterprise, Windows 10 Enterprise 10240 and Windows 10 Enterprise 1511.
We had this issue with Excel 2013 32-bit. A use would be editing a workbook and all of a sudden it would lock up or take a second to switch between cells. Looking at Task Manager, Excel was taking up ~70% of the CPU whilst it was locking up. I was able to replicate the issue and then we traced the problem back to a Windows Update (KB3114717 to be specific). Once KB3114717 was removed, the issue stopped and I was no longer able to replicate the issue. 2b1af7f3a8
