Established by the Summit County Pest Control Association in memory of Bettie Portwood, longtime owner of Akron-based TNT Exterminating and former president of the Ohio Pest Management Association, to provide post-secondary scholarships for the children of association members, with preference given to those studying entomology or a closely related field, and to provide post-secondary scholarships to students of the community studying entomology.
From the beginning, Furman emphasized working together - teamwork and loyalty - so that employees would have long-term employment. Rather than constantly turning over the sales force, he believed a system would be built where everyone could win. He maintains "We wanted to provide a means to earn our living, educate our children, pay our mortgages, enjoy the people with whom we were working, and enjoy business." Understanding the value ofteamwork is not a new concept to Furman. As an undergraduate at Cornell, he captained the heavyweight crew. Later, as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he commanded the destroyer, U.S.S. Register, one of five vessels that rescued survivors from the shark-infested waters after the sinking of the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Indianapolis.
Hard work is nothing new to Sir John. He is not the son of a wealthy family. During his second year at Yale, he learned from his father that family funds could no longer assist in his pursuit of a degree. Not to be swayed from his goal, he worked his way through college, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. He then received a Rhodes Scholarship, enabling him to study at Oxford for two years, receiving his M.A. from Balliol College. Returning to the United States, he moved from Tennessee to New York, working first with Fenner & Beane, one of the predecessors of Merrill Lynch. In 1940, he founded his own investment advisory firm, Templeton, Dobbrow & Vance. That firm grew to manage more than $300 million by the early 1960s. Wall Street could not, however, hold John Templeton, who had wondered for 25 years, "Where is the world would we really want to spend the rest of our lives?" His answer was Lyford Cay in the Bahamas, and it is from there that he operates the Templeton Funds, serving more than 400,000 investors.
High school is one of the most important junctures in your life. It determines if you are prepared to go to college and to which competitive colleges you can be competitive. High school is the time you start thinking about your career aspirations. It is a period when you start having a dream that is more real with realistic plans to achieve goals, one that you are particularly good at and passionate about, whatever that may be. Once you have narrowed your focus, then you should pursue and experiment with real people in real situations. If you have an athletic dream, narrow your focus with one that you can best leverage your physical advantages for that sport while evaluating your physical limits. It is one thing to enjoy basketball, but it is another to be a competitive Division 1 athlete if you lack the physical gift and advantage against other competitive athletes.
Some of you have worked several years and are contemplating a graduate school to pursue a professional or research degree to develop a stronger foundation and long-term capability in your field. Some are pursuing graduate schools directly from college with a major and studies that can make them competitive in their graduate schools. Exception of medical and engineering schools, you can enter any graduate and professional school programs with little or no advanced preparations. But unlike colleges, graduate schools are where you prepare yourself to be a specialist, unless you are pursuing more than one graduate degree. 2b1af7f3a8
