Obesity among children is a serious health problem in the United States. Based on recent national data, the percentage of children aged 6-19 years overweight increased from 44 percent in 1999 to 47 percent in 2003, and obesity among this same population increased from 10 percent to 16 percent in the same time period. In addition, 19 percent of children between 2 and 19 years had elevated blood pressure in 2003, up from 14 percent in 1999, and 43 percent of children between 18 and 19 years had low levels of physical activity, up from 33 percent in 1999. Together, these factors pose a significant risk for many serious health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, some cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer, and early onset of adulthood overweight and obesity

Girl Scouts are an important part of girls' lives and provide necessary learning opportunities that support girls' empowerment. Programs support scouting on a variety of levels and target audiences.
