Dr. Mitra has been awarded with many honors and prizes, and documents have been published upon his research. His citation records include numerous iF, iCAS, iEAS and other categories of the journal and conference special issues. Papers have also been selected for reuse by the National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). He has also authored and co-authored twelve books, and held sixteen U.S. patents. At present, he is a member of the Advisory Board, and on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Applied Optics, the Journal of The Optical Society of America, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing, IEEE/CASSP Letters, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, International Journal of Computer Vision, the Journal of Electronic Imaging, Optical Engineering and Brain and Cognition.
Dr. Mitra received the B.S. degree (1962) in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India and the Ph.D. degree (1968) in Electrical Engineering from MIT, Cambridge, MA. Prior to joining the Departnment of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California (1966), he was an Instructor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India (1962-1966). Dr. Mitra was an Associate Professor at USC (1966-1968) and a Professor at UCSB (1968-1988), where he was a member of the University Council (1978-1986). He was a Visiting Professor at the Universität of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1973. Dr. Mitra has also been a Visiting Professor at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), the University of Waterloo (Canada), and the University of Bristol (UK), all in the 1988-1990 period. From 1989-1992, he was the Chief Scientist of the National Science Foundation Advisory Council on University Initiatives and Program Support, a Federal agency.
