To add the special touch to this recipe, you want to make sure to find really good unsweetened cocoa when making the chocolate frosting. (Click that cocoa link if you want to avoid that in-the-store scavenger hunt we were just talking about! Again, I want to make this as easy as possible for you!)

I love the recipe!! I had some rasberries, and put them in a few at a time instead of milk and it also turned out amazing! And I put just mushed up rasberries in the middle instead of frosting! Thank you for posting this recipe!
Can I make this orange chocolate flavoured? Do you have a chocolate orange buttercream recipe? And could I use this frosting for the chocolate peanut butter cake instead of the on frosting under the ganache?
I would like to use this as the frosting. Is the frosting recipe for cupcakes enough for the cake I am making or should I make one of the other portions at the end of the recipe? Thank you for any help!
Hi Becky, this recipe yields about 2.5 cups of chocolate buttercream, so we would recommend 1.5x the recipe for a 3 layer, 6 inch cake. Or if you plan on doing substantial decorating/frosting, you could even double it. Hope you enjoy it!
We love homemade frosting recipes from Vanilla Buttercream to Cream Cheese Frosting and of course this easy Chocolate Buttercream Frosting. Homemade frostings have better ingredients and taste way better than store-bought.
My grandmother used to use orange juice in her chocolate frosting. Any suggestion on how much to use (I suppose I would cut back on the cream) and whether it would work in this recipe?Thank you.
Omg!!! Hands down the best chocolate frosting I have ever had. Everyone loved it, even the one friend of mine who does not like chocolate cake asked for this recipe. I will never make another frosting other than this one.
This has to be the funniest most delicious chocolate butter cream frosting out there. How delicate yet full flavored it is. I used the recipe with milk, no other substitutes. I frosted my chocolate bundt cake and had plenty. Thank you so much for this recipe.
The frosting was amazing. I absolutely loved it. It was so smooth and not too thin. I used 2 1/2 tbsp of milk instead of heavy cream and it came out delicious. Thank you for a great recipe. I will definitely make it again.
Natasha,This buttercream frosting is AHHHMAZING! So glad that I came across it. Thank you for sharing. The best chocolate buttercream that I have come across. I made this for a chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache & it was beyond bakery worthy!
Wow, this is amazing frosting! My wife loves chocolate peanut butter frosting on her birthday cake. In the past when I added peanut butter to my other frosting recipe it gets very thick, quickly. Do you think this recipe could stay fluffy with peanut butter added?
I tried this recipe today and it was the best Chocolate buttercream ever!! Although I had to add more than 4 tbsp of heavy cream to have the desired consistency but this is going to be my go to recipe. Not overly sweet and chocolate lay!!
Thank you for this recipe. We are hosting good friends in our new home and this recipe to go with vanilla cupcakes. I did not have all ingredients for cupcakes so I used Betty Crocker boxed mix. But I wanted the cupcakes to be special so I made this frosting recipe and my guests really loved it and raved about the frosting. Thank you! l really appreciate your recipes.
Hi Natasha,I made your chocolate buttercream frosting yesterday and it was delicious, but it had a grainy texture even though I used powdered sugar. Can you please tell me what may have gone wrong? Maybe using icing sugar would have helped? Also how do we prevent the frosting from melting? Any solutions for that?It would be highly appreciated if you could clarify these for me. Thanks in advance! ?

Who has the time to make buttercream frosting when it takes all of 2 seconds to toss it into your shopping cart and call it a day? But after a reader emailed me asking for a fool-proof chocolate buttercream frosting recipe (to follow up on the vanilla variety), I knew it was time to wave goodbye to the store-bought stuff and finally go the DIY route.
Other than beating, the only other tip I have for a beautiful classic buttercream frosting is to use the right butter to icing sugar (powdered sugar) ratio. Too much sugar to butter = gritty frosting. Too little, and it just tastes like butter.
Hello I love this recipe it was absolutely a winner when I made it for my family. I was wondering what the recipe was for normal vanilla buttercream do I just substitute the cocoa powder with icing sugar?
Chocolate Frosting with Cocoa Powder and Powdered Sugar is my go-to basic chocolate frosting recipe. I use it for my Chocolate Coca-Cola Cake and on my Famous Rocky Road Brownies. This frosting is great on donuts, over ice cream, and on a classic white cake.
I made this for my bundt cake and it turned out wonderful, everyone loved it. I had to be quick but I put roasted pecan pieces on top before frosting hardened. I definitely will be using this recipe again.Thank you for posting it. ?
I have always had difficulty making icing for my cakes. Spreading it was always done badly. This recipe was easy to make, easy to pour over the cake, looked decorative and tasted great! I had planned to scrape out the pan later, but someone beat me to it. Next time I am including a spoonful of instant coffee! Thank you!
This recipe is exactly what I was looking for. My mother used to make this icing with coffee, and I forgot all about it. I made it with 1/2 milk and 1/2 brewed coffee, so it has a faint coffee taste. And yes, it is delicious!
I just tried making your recipe for frosting and spreed it on my homemade cake. I must say I absolutely love it!! Very easy to make and taste soooo delicious. This was my first time making homemade frosting and I will never buy store bought again. My family and I thank you.
Steps 9-10: This is the fun part of the recipe where you get to taste your frosting. You are trying to determine if the consistency is correct or if it needs more milk or maybe a little more vanilla extract. If it tastes great, test the consistency. Too thick? Add some milk and mix again to check to see if it is now the right consistency. The amount of milk to use depends on the state of your frosting and sometimes the time of year (if it is a hot humid day, you might not need to add any milk.) A good rule of thumb is to add the milk a teaspoon at a time. You can check out our FAQ section below to see some other advice on making the perfect batch of frosting.
How much frosting will you need? That always depends on how thick or thin you apply the frosting or how much decorating you do but here are a couple of guidelines. Our recipe should make enough Best Chocolate Buttercream Frosting to cover a 9" x 13" sheet cake or a two-layer 8" cake. If you are making cupcakes, you should be able to frost 24 cupcakes if you apply the frosting with a knife. If you swirl on the frosting with a pastry bag as we have done here, you should be able to frost 15-18 cupcakes depending on the size of the swirl.

Hello Devashnie! This frosting is perfect for frosting and decorating cakes. You can bake the cakes up to 2 days in advance, wrap them in plastic wrap, and store them at room temperature. Thanks for your interest in my recipe. Please come back and let me know how you like it =)
Hello Ramya! You can swap 1 ounce of baking chocolate for 3 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. For this recipe, I would start adding 100 gr of cocoa powder, taste, and then add more if necessary, up to 140 gr total. Hope this helps!
